Since the natural landmark is so famous during the summer and fall, there is restricted access to the area when the maroon bells are full of clouds and azure blue skies, and golden-hued aspen groves.

Autumn is an adorable time to visit. The best way to see the maroon bells is to take the Roaring fork transportation authority (RFTA) public bus service and visit in midweek when there are fewer crowds. From mid – June through early October, the bus runs between 8 am to 5 pm.

From Aspen, from Rubey park transit center in downtown aspens to aspen highlands, catch the RFTA free bus (castle/ maroon line). Alternatively, you can drive and park your car for $5  (weekdays) or $10 in the aspen highlands (weekend).

Buy your aspen highlands to maroon bells bus fare at the aspen Highlands ski resort. Downtown aspen’s free bus will drop you right in front of the hotel. Tickets are $8. You’ll be dropped right at the trailheads on the maroon lake until you get to maroon bells.

This year, a personal vehicle or shuttle reservations are required to visit the maroon bells scenic area. Park your car in the parking structure of the aspen highlands. You have to pay the parking fee from rubey park transit center in downtown aspen.

Hiking at Maroon Bells

If you are planning to hike in the area, you should be prepared for the following since you have to deal with the high altitudes of the mountain peaks, you will be dehydrated very soon. So to present this, take precautionary action and stay hydrated.

Be sure to bring sunscreen and wear layers. At maroon bells, the altitude change will make it much colder than downtown Aspen. The heat is much stronger there, though, and you are more likely to get burned at such a high altitude. The morning at sunrise is the best time of the day to visit maroon bells, and the best time of the year to see maroon bells is in mid to late  September.

Maroon bells give you many trails for the visitors. some trails are listed out below,

  • Maroon lake scenic trail is a simple 1-mile round trip that starts at the parking area and follows the lake circumference.
  • Maroon creek trail – 3.2 miles one-way trail to strat at the maroon lake outlet and encounter 91pine meadows, aspen forests, and rocky slopes along the maroon creek.
  • Crater lake trail – 3.6 miles round trip trail with stunning vistas at bushy aspen woodlands and crater lake. Steep and rocky climb cooler temperature and spontaneous thunderstorms.

Nested at 8460 feats on the maroon creek banks, the silver bell campground has 14 tent sites and boasts gorgeous panoramas in the white river national forest of aspen groves, wildflower meadows, and flowering spruce and fir forests. There is nearby access to the maroon creek trail and excellent trout fishing at maroon creak.

In cold-weather months, maroon creek road is closed to vehicular traffic, but you can cross – country Ski. Snowshoe or snowmobile to the area, A snowmobile tour of the snow-dusted maroon bells is provided by T- Lazy Ranch, which provides the opportunity to cross miles of groomed trails mid wintery meadows and thick aspen groves.
